Our History

Southwest Mill Supply was formed as a proprietorship by Mr. A.D. Swartz in the early 1920s. As a salesman for agricultural related products he saw a need for replacement hammermill hammers by many of his customers. He began manufacturing hammers in his basement and delivered them as he made his regular sales calls.

During the early 1930s SMS began supplying screens to compliment their hammers and became the first “full service” replacement parts supplier. Mr. Swartz moved the operation from his basement to, 232 North Baltimore, sometime during the 1930s. The original building had been added onto several times through the years, until the new facility was erected in 1994.

In 1946, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ackerman bought the business and operated it jointly until Mr. Ackerman’s death in 1966. Mrs. Ackerman continued to run the business with the assistance of a very knowledgeable and dedicated plant manager, Mr. Ben Graves. In 1977 the present ownership purchased the assets of the company and has continued to operate at the same location.
